Fancy a pint? We take a look inside Wearside's newest pub

Six months in construction, the Teal Farm pub, in Edale Close, Washington, has welcomed its first customers after opening in the shadow of new housing estates in Teal Farm.

Marston’s has opened the pub, which seats 120 people, in response to the flurry of house building activity in the area and hopes it will become a community hub.

It’s the first purpose-built pub the chain has opened and they’ve used it as an opportunity to showcase new technologies, including a touch screen community board and juke box and booths which feature interactive children’s games.

Aaron Stewart, franchisee at Teal Farm, says the pub, which has created 40 new jobs, is proving popular already.

“There isn’t another pub like this around here,” he said. “Even before we opened we had more than 3,000 likes on Facebook and lots of people have been walking past and asking when we’re opening.

“We had some preview nights over the weekend when we invited local residents along and the feedback was great. After six months of building work, it’s very exciting to be open finally.

“We want the community to come and get involved and we’ll be having quiz nights and a pool team.”

The pub features a ranges of drinks, including four hand pulls and IPAs, as well as a daily food menu featuring pub classics, Mexican food, grills and family favourites.

Councillor Fiona Miller, from Washington East ward, said: “I’m over the moon with how it looks. This is the newest community in the area and the pub is a great facility. It means people won’t have to get in their cars or pay for a taxi to go for a drink or meal. Previously, residents here have had to drive for a night out. So I’m sure it will be very popular.”

Sue Taylor, from nearby Teal Farm Way, said: “We chose to live here because we’re so close to the A1 and the A1231, but the area’s been missing something like this. It looks great.”
