A PRIESTLY duo want people to join them for a pint at pub talks.

Catholic fathers, Dan Fitzpatrick and Marc Lyden-Smith, are taking their modern style of religion to the masses in the series of talks.

The pair, who met 10 years ago while training to be priests, are holding their faith-based iThirst events in The Londonderry pub, in Sunderland.

The first talk, Cyberfaith with Dr Pete Philips, was a huge success, with standing room only, so Frs Dan and Marc, who also run their own podcast calling themselves The Podfathers, are looking forward to the next one on Sunday, January 18, also at the Londonderry.

The talk, which starts at 7.30pm, will feature world-renowned physicist Professor David Wilkinson, who will discuss the possible implications that intelligent extraterrestrial life could have upon religions.

Fr Marc, who is based at St Mary’s Church in Sunderland’s Bridge Street and who made international headlines when he famously once presented the Pope with a Sunderland shirt, and Fr Dan, who is based in Stanley, said anyone is welcome along to the evenings, which also include live folk music.

Fr Dan, 28, said: “It almost seems arrogant to expect people to come to us, so we decided we should get out there and go where people tend to be.

“We are both young men and enjoy a pint or a glass of wine, so thought holding something in a pub would be ideal.

“When we held the first one we didn’t know what to expect, but the place was packed.

“The atmosphere was great, not like a talk at all, and what surprised us was that we had people from all walks of life and backgrounds come along.”

Fr Dan said the first talk was such a success they have moved into a bigger room for the next one.
