FAMILY and friends of tragic schoolboy Matthew Hayes will say their final goodbyes at the 12-year-old’s funeral on Wednesday.

A service will be held at St Matthew’s Church in Silksworth Road at 2pm, followed by committal at Sunderland Crematorium.

The Venerable Bede Academy pupil died after he was struck by a bus on his way home from school on Friday, November 22.

He had been crossing the road in Ryhope Street just before 3.30pm when he was struck by the Go North East Simplicity bus, just outside Asda.

Despite efforts from paramedics and other emergency services staff, Matthew, who lived with his family in Moorside, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Many dozens of tributes were left at the scene in the wake of the tragedy, with family, school friends and even strangers turning out to give their respects.
