THE family of Matthew Hayes today paid tribute to those who tried to save his life after he was hit by a bus.

The 12-year-old had been crossing the road in Ryhope Street, Sunderland, just before 3.30pm on Friday when he was struck by the Go North East Simplicity bus, just outside Asda.

Despite efforts from paramedics and other emergency services staff, the Venerable Bede CofE Academy pupil was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family today released a short statement.

The family said: “We would like to thank all the people who tried to save Matthew’s life on Friday.

“We know there were a lot of people at the scene, including Matthew’s schoolfriends, members of the public and all the emergency services. We know everyone did their best to try and save Matthew.”
