Family and friends gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday of a local woman.

Elizabeth Preece, who was born in Seaham Harbour, marked the occasion at the Village Nursing and Care Home in Murton. In her younger days, Elizabeth worked as a farmer and then as a maid in London.

A mother to three sons, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren, she was widowed when her husband died in the Second World War.

‘Betty’, as she is known, moved to the Village in March last year, where she loves to knit and embroider.
