Factory fire ongoing for 10 hours in Peterlee

Firefighters are at a Peterlee industrial estate tackling a factory fire which has been burning for 10 hours.

Crews were called to South West Industrial Estate, off Whitehouse Way, at 9pm yesterday after a factory was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from Peterlee, Durham and Bishop Auckland stations joined forces to tackle the blaze in the building which is believed to store clothes.

Officers from Peterlee Station are still on site this morning and the area has been cordoned off.

There's no indication the fire as started maliciously - but an investigation will be carried out later today.

Crew manager Andy Wetherspoon said: "The fir e is still ongoing and we have crews at the scene.

"The flames are all extinguished now, they've all been dampened down, but we're making sure everything is kept under control.

"At this stage there's no indication it was started maliciously, but a full fire investigation will be carried out."
