A CYCLIST was killed after a rush-hour collision with a bus.
The man was declared dead at the scene, on the A1231 slip road at its junction with Spire Road in Washington.
It happened at around 7.40am when the man, who had been riding a silver cycle, was involved in a collision with the Go North East No8 bus to Stanley, County Durham.
Following the accident, the Barmston slip roads were closed and diversions were put in place.
The identity of the dead man had not yet been released by police. No one else was injured in the collision.
Following the crash, tributes were left to the cyclist on the Echo’s Facebook page.
Kaley Copeland wrote: “Thoughts go to that poor cyclist’s family RIP.”
Allan McManus wrote: “So sad, I’ve not cycled to work since the dark mornings and nights for this reason.
“I used the paths once and used to get lots of abuse from pedestrians, be careful everyone cycling.”
While Ann Mullen posted: “That road is so dangerous and something needs to be done to prevent another tragic accident.”
Northumbria Police has appealed for any witnesses to the collision to call 101.
