Extra services have been arranged for the festival of flight, which will run during the weekend of July 23 and 24 on Roker seafront, with a launch event planned for the Friday evening.

The service’s bosses say visitors are also being advised to allow plenty of time for their journey.

Metro services are expected to be very busy over the weekend, so DB Regio Tyne and Wear, which operates the Metro on behalf of Nexus, recommends anyone heading to the event on Metro should allow plenty of time to make their journey.

Extra Metro services will be running to get people home after the event.

Paul Walker, customer service director of DB Regio Tyne and Wear, said: “The Sunderland International Airshow is one of our busiest weekends of the year as thousands of people travel to Roker and the Seaburn seafront.

“We expect services to be busy on both days, Seaburn station in particular, with queues following the event.

“Extra Metros will be running but my message to customers is to please leave plenty of time for your journey.

“Extra staff at Metro stations will help customers to save time and avoid queueing at the ticket machines.

“A DaySaver costs £4.80 and is valid for all day and all zone travel.

“It can also be used on the Shields Ferry and on Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland.
“We’d encourage people travelling to the event to buy a DaySaver to help make their journeys as quick and efficient as possible.”
