Good news for shoppers this Christmas as Tyne and Wear Metro has announced it will be running additional services during the busy festive period.
The additional Metro services will be in operation from December 10 until December 23, to ensure shoppers, families and party-goers can get around the network during the busy run-up to Christmas.
Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro, is funding the services as part of its operating contract with DB Regio.
Passengers will benefit from a higher frequency of trains on the Metro system in the lead up to Christmas. In Metro’s central areas through Newcastle city centre there will be a train every five minutes – making it one of the most high frequency light rail services outside of London.
Sharon Kelly, Managing Director at Tyne and Wear Metro, said: “Christmas is a very busy time of year for everyone and it’s important that we reflect the increased demand with extra services.
“We know there will be lots of people using Metro to do their shopping and get to and from Christmas parties so we hope the additional services will help them travel with ease.”
