A SUNDERLAND lifeboat training exercise became a real emergency.

Volunteers from the city’s station were called away from a training exercise shortly before 9.30am yesterday after a 21ft pleasure boat sprang a leak.

A portable pump was used to reduce the water level before the boat was towed in to Sunderland Marina.

“The crew on this boat were very lucky to realise that they were taking on water before they got out into the open sea,” said RNLI senior helmsman Paul Nicholson.
