Sunderland are in talks with Manchester United over a loan move for forward Adnan Januzaj.

The Black Cats are on the verge of sealing deals for midfield pair Leroy Fer and Yann M’Vila, and it is understood that they are also hoping to secure a third loan by pulling off a transfer coup for Januzaj.

There have been rumours about Sunderland’s possible interest in Januzaj throughout the summer, with Everton also keeping a close eye on the situation after seeing a loan approach in the January transfer window rejected by Man United.

But the Echo understands that Sunderland have held productive discussions with United over Januzaj and they are hoping to seal a season-long switch which would provide a major boost to their attacking ranks.

Januzaj started just seven Premier League outings for United last season after making a huge impression in his breakthrough season under David Moyes 12 months earlier.

But United boss Louis van Gaal indicated last month that he had been impressed by Januzaj during their pre-season campaign and would use the 20-year-old in a central striker role this season.

However, United are still in the market for further attacking reinforcements – principally Barcelona’s Pedro – while van Gaal and fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat have known each other for decades.

Sunderland can also boast a successful record in developing youngsters from the Premier League’s heavyweights during loan spells.

Danny Welbeck, Jonny Evans and Danny Rose have all established themselves at their parent clubs after stints with Sunderland.

Signing Januzaj would represent a major boost to Sunderland’s attack, which was the second worst in the Premier League last season, albeit the Black Cats have subsequently spent £8million on winger Jeremain Lens.

The Echo understands that Sunderland have held productive discussions with United over Januzaj.

Sunderland were offered – and rejected – the chance to sign Rudy Gestede, before the Frenchman joined Aston Villa from Blackburn in a £6m deal.

But after Connor Wickham joined Crystal Palace in a £9m move earlier this week, Sunderland have moved fast to bring in reinforcements.

Fer should offer a goal threat from midfield too, with the Dutch international’s season-long loan switch from QPR likely to be confirmed today.

The 25-year-old – cousin of Sunderland left-back Patrick van Aanholt – was in the North East yesterday to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical after the Black Cats appear to have beaten off competition from the likes of PSV and West Ham.

Fer will pen a straightforward loan deal, without a permanent clause built in, with QPR eager to remove the £8m midfielder from the wage bill.

Fer is one of two midfielders that Sunderland are confident of landing before the start of the season this weekend, with the Black Cats still working towards finalising a deal for M’Vila.

French international M’Vila will join on a season-long loan from Russian club Ruben Kazan, potentially with a view to a longer-team deal.
