Ex-Tottenham target Joel Asoro reveals why he joined Swansea City and reflects on Sunderland spell

Asoro, who had indicated his desire to leave the Stadium of Light following the club's relegation to League One, was unveiled over the weekend, with the 19-year-old Swede looking to nail down a place in the starting XI.

Sunderland have included a sell-on clause in the deal which could see the Black Cats benefit in the future.

It emerged over the weekend that earlier this summer Premier League Tottenham Hotspur pulled out of a deal for Asoro because of his agent's demands, Spurs had agreed a fee but the wage expectations were said to be too high.

Now at Swansea, Asoro is hungry to prove his worth.

"My target is to get some more game-time," said Asoro.

"It’s a new club for me and you never know how it will go, but I want to enjoy my time at Swansea.

"I had a couple of options this summer but the main thing was getting game-time and being somewhere I think I will enjoy my football. I think that will be Swansea.

"I have been playing as a striker in most of my games at Sunderland, but I am more of a winger.

"I like to turn and go at defenders and use my pace. I also like to score goals of course. That’s always a good feeling."

Potter said: "He has a lot of potential but has quality already. He is lightning quick, so the supporters will like his pace. He will certainly excite them.

"He can play in the wide areas or centrally, so he offers us options.

"His high-end qualities are very good, and he affects defences with his pace. He did that in the Championship last season.

"At only 19 he has a lot of time ahead of him. But we believe he can be exciting for us this season."

He has penned a four-year deal at the Liberty Stadium, bringing an end to his three-year stay at the Stadium of Light, he made 35 appearances for the club, netting three times.

Reflecting on last season, Asoro added: "The game-time I got was very good for me at Sunderland, those opportunities are what I am looking for now.

“Last season at Sunderland we started under Simon Grayson. We won a couple of games and thought we were going all right, but then a couple of things happened midway through the season.

“We got a new manager, changed the playing style and lost some very good players like Lewis Grabban, who scored a lot of goals.

“Obviously for me it wasn’t so bad because it gave me the chance to play some more games.

“Chris Coleman was very nice to me from the day he arrived. He told me he was going to get me some game-time.

“You never know if it will happen, but thankfully it did. I was very pleased with how things went."
