Ex-mayor’s pride at tree honour
Former Peterlee mayor George Cowie has told of his pride after a tree was planted in his honour at the town council’s Shotton Hall grounds.
Coun Cowie, 80, who is still a Labour representative for the town’s Howletch ward, was mayor of Peterlee in 1978-79 and 2004-05, and the tree commemorates his times in office.
He said: “I’m thrilled to bits, because this means I’ll always be part of Peterlee Town Council.

“The grounds are open to the public during office hours, in Shotton Hall, and it’s a lovely park to walk around.”
