Coun Lillian Wood and Ron Curtis planted the trees at Shotton Hall, the headquarters of Peterlee Town Council.

Coun Curtis was mayor from 2005-06 and again in 2013-14. He took his grandson Joshua Maudling along to help him plant his memorial tree.

Coun Wood was mayor from 2010 to 2011. During her year in office, she donated to 11 charities, including Macmillan cancer after she lost several family members to the disease, and the MS Society after her son was diagnosed with the illness at the age of 27, and her granddaughter, now 11, has been a sufferer since the age of five.

She said: “My year was a busy time and I met a lot of people. It was enjoyable and helping the charities was very fulfilling.”
