Two gymnasts from Deerness Gymnastics Academy have become the club’s first female acrobats to win a senior all-round competition medal on the international stage.
Abbi Greaves, 15, from Ushaw Moor and Chelsea Fisher, 19, competed in the Women’s Pair at the 2015 Senior European Championships and won bronze in the all-around competition, behind Belarus (silver) and Russia (gold).
Reigning British Champions, the girls have moved up from competing in the 12-18 age group last year where they won gold at the Age Group World Championships, to representing Great Britain in their first ever international tournament as seniors.
Deerness High performance coach, Stuart Thompson said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for Abbi and Chelsea. In their first year competing as seniors, to win a medal in a major competition, just shows the hard work and commitment that the pair have put in.
“It’s great that once again Deerness Gymnastics Academy had gymnasts representing Great Britain at the very highest level of competition. This was a great opportunity for the club, coaches and gymnasts to gain valuable experience on the international stage and to take pride in representing Great Britain at the same time.”
Six gymnasts from the Academy represented Great Britain in the Acrobatic European Championships which took place in Riesa, Germany.
Hundreds of acrobatic gymnasts from all over Europe competed in the prestigious tournament. The Durham gymnasts faced competition from Portugal, Poland, Georgia, Moldova, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Belgium and Belarus.
