Estate left to fade away

It seems that the council has '˜given up' on Hylton Castle Estate.

Over the past few years it has passed the main shopping area over to a private owner who has almost doubled the rents and other charges.

Some of the shops have agreed and signed new leases, but some of the shops are two shops wide so it is double for them.

Even the little library has been put up for sale, when it could actually be made into a nice children’s nursery.

The services have been cut back and there is always rubbish flying about and the bins are always overflowing.

Some of these shops have been trading there for almost 40 years, I think.

The public seems to be deserting the area.

The hairdressers, which I’ve been going to for more than 30 years, many not be able to keep trading for much longer.

It is a family business which has been there more than the 40 years and might even have to close up completely.

Come on, council, I’m sure you can help all these people.
