A seal pup has been rescued by a coastguard team after becoming stranded on Seaham beach.

An adorable video captured by the coastguard team shows a seal pup being released back into the ocean after it became stranded next to Featherbed Rock.

Teams were called at 10.40am on Sunday, December 1, to assist the stranded mammal.

A spokesman for the rescue service said: “On arrival on scene, we spoke with the first informant and the seal was located.

“The seal was on the wrong side of the rock armour and was unable to access the sea.

“The relevant authorities were informed of the situation and, following an on-scene assessment, it was decided that the Coastguard would undertake the seal rescue.

“The seal pup was taken to a suitable location for access to the open sea and released.”

The little pup then safely returned to sea.
