WEARSIDE’S first supergreen buses were due to take to the streets today on a new transport route.

The Oprate Solo SR hybrid-engine buses were being introduced on the Sunderland Connect 700 route, which links major city centre attractions and amenities.

James Blackburn, the senior councillor responsible for transport in Sunderland, officially launched the buses at Park Lane this morning.

He said: “The benefits of using hybrid vehicles as opposed to conventional diesel include a lower fuel consumption, which makes the bus a cleaner service and minimises carbon dioxide and particle emissions.”

Stops include Sunderland Royal Hospital, the Stadium of Light and both university campuses. The council and the university are working with Nexus on the new service.
