Community groups are being called upon to get involved in an annual Wearside festival which is now just weeks away.
The 2016 Houghton Feast festival takes place from Friday, October 7, until Sunday, October 16.
A highlight of the fun has for decades been the annual carnival parade and procession, this year taking place on Saturday, October 8.
Organisers from Houghton’s Round Table group are now urging those who want to take part in the colourful procession, which features classic cars and vehicles, to contact them with applications.
This year’s theme is “Movie Magic”.
The parade begins at the rear of Houghton Library car park, in Station Road, before journeying through the town centre.
“As an exciting addition to the event, all vintage and classic vehicles will then be directed into the large car park area of Kepier Academy to be involved with a vehicle exhibiton of all entries, which will give the public a unique opportunity to view the vehicles close at hand and meet the owners of the vehicles.”John Price
Floats are then sent to be judged by Mayor of Sunderland, Coun Alan Emerson, in The Broadway.
Parade organiser John Price said: “As an exciting addition to the event, all vintage and classic vehicles will then be directed into the large car park area of Kepier Academy to be involved with a vehicle exhibition of all entries, which will give the public a unique opportunity to view the vehicles close at hand and meet the owners of the vehicles.
“Meanwhile all the walking groups will be guided into Rectory Park (grass area) when supportive Feast entertainment will be provided and families can meet together and further enjoy this unique afternoon.”
Houghton Feast originated as a dedication service at Michaelmas to the parish church of St Michael and All Angels in the town of Houghton.
The festival was revived during the middle of the last century and continues to bring in thousands of people to the town each year to enjoy the fun fair on Rectory Field and other events.
Application forms for entering the parade are available from Mr Price by calling him on 553 6600 or 584 6726.
All entry forms must be returned to him at the address Whitefield, Gillas Lane East, Houghton, DH5 8LB.
