The UK Coastguard along with Sunderland inshore lifeboat team and the ambulance service were called to the pier around 8.49pm on July 6 after a man was spotted climbing over the side of the pier and seen entering the water.

A ambulance spokesman said a hazardous area response team was called to the incident, but on arrival the man had managed to pull himself out of the water to safety.

He suffered a minor head injury and was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where his condition is not said to be life threatening.

Crews left the scene around 9.30pm.
