Elderly cyclist critical after car accident in Sunderland

A CYCLIST in his 70s was left in a critical condition after his bike collided with a car.

The pensioner was airlifted to hospital following the accident at 2pm yesterday.

Police and paramedics from the Great North Air Ambulance (GNNA) were called to Harbour View after a 999 call reporting the accident.

The pensioner is understood to have suffered serious facial injuries.

A spokesman for the GNAA said: “The man was treated on scene before being flown to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

“The journey took five minutes from the scene in Sunderland.”

•Another pensioner remains in a critical condition after being knocked down outside a Sunderland social club on Sunday night.

The 75-year-old – named locally as Tommy Wilson – suffered serious head injuries after he was struck outside Pennywell Comrades Club, on Hylton Bank.

The grandfather had been crossing the road after leaving the club shortly after 11pm.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101 ext 69191, quoting log number 1046 of 05/01/14.
