GRANDPARENTS on Wearside spend on average 12 hours a week looking after their grandchildren, according to a new report.
The latest research from over-50s insurance provider RIAS shows that the figure is more than the national average of 10.
The “21st Century Grandparenting” report, now in its fourth year, also revealed virtually none of the grandparents who provide regular childcare, only two per cent, receive any formal payment for their time.
The report from RIAS also revealed that UK grandparents are saving families a staggering £1,888 each year in childcare costs.
This equates to an average of £11billion each year in childcare “wages”, as 5.8million grandparents in the UK, 47 per cent, regularly provide childcare for their grandchildren.
