Eight great chippies for a Good Friday fish lot in Sunderland

We love chocolate (who doesn’t), but going for fish and chips on Good Friday may just be our favourite Easter culinary tradition.

In honour of fish being the dish of the day, we’ve rounded up our favourite ‘plaices’ to be.

Expect queues to tail around the corner, but it’ll be worth it - it’s chips!

1. Merrills Fish Grill, Chester Road

It’s just battered the opposition to be named in Just Eat’s top 10 fish and chip restaurants in the UK, beating off stiff competition from 22,000 other Just Eat ordering service takeaways. Merrills has been going for around 50 years and good old fish and chips is still its best seller. Not even a doner kebab can compete.

2. Downey’s, North Terrace, Seaham, and Pier Point, Roker

They built up such a firm following in Seaham, they expanded to Roker. Not only do they offer a takeaway service in cartons, you can also sit in to dine - fancy!

3. Crozier’s, Crozier Street, Monkwearmouth

Proper chips. Proper fish. Served with proper batter on top. Enough said.

4. Redz

Redz is no small fry: it’s the best chippy for miles - as voted by you!

Last year we gave you the chance to vote for your favourite chippy, and Redz came out trumps at its former Barnes shop. The family-run chain, which has various sites, say the secret to their success is keeping on top of the fish, the potatoes and the frying.

5. Minchella’s, Seaburn

There’s nothing like strolling down Seaburn promenade on your day off with a fish lot in your hand - and dodging the swooping seagulls as you go. For al fresco chips, you can’t beat Minchella’s.

6. Daniela’s Fish Bar, Front Street, East Boldon

If you like your fish and chips posh, head to East Boldon. This chippy breaks the mould with its contemporary decor. It’ll be open from 11am on Good Friday, so you don’t even have to wait until lunchtime to get your fish fix.

7. Clems, Maritime Terrace, Sunderland city centre

For city centre chips, Clems is a safe bet. The chain’s been frying up fish lots for 60 years, so they know their cod.

8. Davy’s Fried Fish Shop, Beamish, County Durham

You’ll have to head up the road for this one, but if you want traditional fish and chips, you can’t beat Beamish. Get down to the pit village to try fish and chips made in coal-fired ranges using beef dripping and served up in specially-printed newspaper. It’s made using traditional methods, so expect a wait for your bait - but you can taste the difference.
