VOLUNTEER staff and students from the University of Sunderland’s law department helped raise more than £47,000 for Sport Relief.

The group of 24 helped man the phone lines at More Than’s contact centre in Sunderland on Sport Relief night, taking cash pledges from the public between 6.45pm until midnight, collecting £47,600 for the charity event.

Senior lecturer in law, Nicola Wake, organised the volunteers and was delighted with the enthusiastic response from staff and students.

She said: “It was great to see so many of our law department staff and students volunteer for this extraordinary event, which raises money for some of the most disadvantaged people in this country and overseas.

“There were 40 willing volunteers, which was a fantastic result. More Than had to restrict numbers to 24 to abide by safety regulations and all our volunteers did a great job.”

Gavin Fletcher of the More Than contact centre, which hosted the Sport Relief phone lines, said: “Nicola did a great job in bringing together so many people who were willing to help us take pledges all night.

“We were very impressed with the level of support the law students provided.”
