SUNDERLAND bowling sensation Phil Dixon stormed the green to lift the area under-25’s trophy in Durham.

Phil, 22, from Tunstall, eased to a straight sets victory over his Northumbrian counterpart in the final to be crowned champion of the North East’s Area 1.

In the two previous rounds, Phil progressed with straight-sets victories.

A jubilant Phil said: “Obviously I’m delighted to have won as there were some excellent bowlers there. It is a great honour to be champion for the region.”

He added that the two-set victory at the Durham Indoor Bowling Club is the culmination of a consistent season.

He said: “I’m having a very good season so far, I feel that I am playing the best I have played since I first started playing competitively indoors.”

“Hopefully I can win my next game which will allow me to play in the national finals down in Rugby which would be a great opportunity.”

Phil who has recently graduated from Northumbria University, now awaits the winner from the Cumbrian region.

The fixture must be completed by January 6.
