A SUNDERLAND primary school is celebrating a successful Ofsted inspection.

Inspectors visited East Herrington Primary Academy, in Balmoral Terrace, and rated it as good overall.

Head Teacher Alison Hodgson said the news is a reflection of the hard work of staff, pupils and the wider school community.

She said: “The academy and governing body are delighted with the inspection report. We work hard to provide a broad and challenging curriculum that supports the children’s learning and it is rewarding to know our work has been recognised.

“The commitment of staff and the supportive atmosphere amongst pupils are fundamental factors in the academy’s success, which will hopefully continue for another 50 years.”

Inspectors said of the school: “Leaders, including governors, work together effectively to make sure that teaching is at least good so that all pupils achieve well.

“The senior leadership team, led exceptionally well by the headteacher, is highly ambitious for the school and is determined to raise further the attainment of all pupils.

“Recent and continuing actions have ensured that achievement is good and quickly improving.”

The inspectors said children in the nursery and reception classes make a good start in their reading, writing and understanding of numbers.

To improve further the school needs to improve the quality of teaching so that attainment and the rates of progress pupils make in their learning are consistently outstanding.
