SUNDERLAND Autism Outreach Team has been shortlisted for a national award.

In recognition of their remarkable work, providing support for parents and carers of children and young people with autism, the team has been shortlisted for the Innovative Family Support category, in The National Autistic Society’s (NAS) Autism Professionals Awards 2015.

The annual event, which first took place in 2013, recognises and rewards services and professionals that lead the way in innovative autism practice, and make a real difference to the lives of people with the condition in the UK.

Sunderland Autism Outreach Team works with other organisations to provide intervention, support and training for children, parents and schools, which contributes to the children reaching their full potential.

Janet Raine, a member of the team, said: “We are really pleased to be shortlisted for this prestigious award.

“This reaffirms our belief that joint working between agencies and professionals is the best way to support the children with autism and their families.

“Our team includes professionals from City Hospitals Sunderland Speech and Language Department, Columbia Grange School and Sunderland Education Authority.”

The NAS award winners will be announced on March 3.
