A SUNDERLAND school was one of dozens which joined in London 2012 World Sport Day.

Pupils at Thornhill School were among thousands of youngsters in Get Set schools and local communities across the North East, who held special activities to celebrate the athletes and cultures of the world.

The Thornholme Road school held a Primary Olympic Festival, which involved children from the feeder schools.

It included a colourful opening ceremony, which featured stilt walkers and circus performers.

London 2012 World Sport Day was part of the London 2012 education programme, Get Set, through which more than 20,000 schools and colleges, many in Sunderland, have been recognised and rewarded for their commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic values.
