A TOP degree plus a prestigious award equals a bright future for one graduate.

Steven Charlton, 22, from Hendon, had extra reason to celebrate after being awarded a first-class masters degree in mathematics by Durham University.

The Institute of Mathematics, which approves Durham’s course of study, awarded Steven one of two prizes for students who achieved the best marks, meaning he can add AMIMA (Associate Member of the Institute of Mathematics) to the list of letters after his surname.

Steven said: “I’m quite happy with it. I was surprised when I found out.

“It will look good on my CV.”

The former Valley Road Primary School pupil now enjoys all the perks of being a member of the Institute, such as being granted chartered mathematician status.

He plans to return to Durham to complete a PHD.
