SUNDERLAND High School celebrated pupils’ achievements at a special end-of-year-speech day.

Newcastle Eagles basketball team player-coach Fabulous Flournoy presented winners with their awards.

Flournoy, standing at 6ft, 3ins tall, is noted for his tenacious defence and high standards on the court.

So it was fitting that the high standards of Sunderland High School pupils should be awarded by the imposing shooting guard, set to play into his 40th year.

Sunderland Echo editor John Szymanski joined parents and carers in the audience.

The Echo sponsored the media studies awards. John said: “It was a pleasure to see so many Sunderland students doing so well and being awarded for their achievements and hard work.”

The pupils, from Years 7 to 13, received awards for achievement and endeavour. They also received special school and headteacher’s awards.
