Sunderland graduates win advertising ‘Oscar’

TWO Sunderland graduates have won an international award for their unique plan to put themselves ahead of the competition.

Marc Rayson and Callum Prior, who graduated with degrees in advertising and design from the University of Sunderland last week, beat 22,000 entries worldwide to win the prestigious D&AD Yellow Pencil for Advertising in the “Make Your Mark” category of the Student Awards 2013.

The Pencil is seen as the Oscar of the advertising world, and it was the students’ record of their journey to London to stand out among thousands of other advertising graduates and land themselves a placement which won them the award.

Armed with just a camera, Marc and Callum boarded an early-morning Megabus from Sunderland and headed to London in the hope of landing a placement.

During the seven-hour journey, they came up with a new portfolio called The Megabus Book, writing advertising campaigns for global brands Nike, Sony, Virgin, Morrisons and Comedy Central, all inspired by articles they had read that day.

Advertising agencies were so impressed that Marc and Callum were offered a number of placements.

Marc, 22, from Newcastle, said: “Winning the Yellow Pencil award still hasn’t quite sunk in yet.

“It’s the award every design student in the world strives towards.”

Callum, 21, from Devon, added: “Our next goal is to win a professional one.”
