STUDENTS have voted Sunderland as the top university in the North East.

The annual Whatuni Student Choice Awards see students rank a range of categories out of five, including university facilities, accommodation, course and lecturers, job prospects and city life.

This year, Sunderland came top in the region and 15th in the UK, jumping from 61st last year.

Interim Vice-Chancellor Shirley Atkinson said: “We’re delighted that students have ranked Sunderland the top university in the North East and 15th in the UK.

“We place our students at the heart of everything we do and this result shows the impact of our efforts is genuinely felt.

“That the students are giving positive feedback all year on factors such as their experience, course and job prospects also shows that what we’re doing is consistent.

“We’re very proud of our excellent facilities, including our accommodation offer which has been ranked highly by both our UK and international students.

“We offer a great quality of life as well as excellent courses, access to teaching research academics and links with business.

“We know that students value how supportive and friendly Sunderland is because they tell us – now we know that they’re telling everyone.”
