Students see huge rise in rent costs

ACCOMMODATION costs for students have more than doubled in 10 years, according to an NUS survey.

Annual rents for in university accommodation increased by 112 per cent from an average £2,146 in 2001/02 to £4,759 in 2011/12. Weekly costs also rose by 104 per cent, from an average of £54.33 to £113.32.

Michael Egan, President of the Students’ Union at the University of Sunderland said: “It remains a key priority for the Students’ Union to ensure our students receive a fair deal and the best possible support during their time at the University of Sunderland.”
