Schoolchildren turn journalists for lessons

YOUNGSTERS have been making the news.

Students from Roseberry Sports and Community College have been learning about the news, and were given the opportunity to write their own news bulletin as part of lessons.

Year 9 and 10 pupils have been training as if they were journalists, carrying out interviews and producing news reports.

Jo Leach, a teacher at the Chester-le-Street school, said: “The students had so much fun completing this last year that they insisted on signing up again.

“This year’s report is bigger and better.”

As part of the same project the pupils connected with staff from Durham County Council.

They interviewed officers for their news reports, which included features on national stories such as the Prime Minister’s visit to the United States.

“We’ve learned to collaborate and work as a team,” said Ben, Fraser, 14, who took part in the project.

“I know it sounds cheesy but it’s true.”
