A NURSERY is celebrating being given an outstanding Ofsted report.
Sunshine Day Nursery in Peterlee received the rating from the Government watchdog and was praised for working in the community.
To celebrate, the nursery has a new addition from Lee’s Pets & Aquatic, also in Peterlee, which has given it a tortoise to look after for a year.
Kelly Walton, nursery manager, said: “The children love Lee’s, they have been so welcoming and let us go round to see all of the animals.
“The staff are fantastic, they bring out the exotic animals like snakes, spiders, even owls, and tell us all about them.
“The children get to see things they wouldn’t see in everyday life.”
The visits to the pet shop form part of the nursery’s plan to teach the children about nature.
Kelly said: “We go out and about in the community. For example, we go on walks in the environment.
“Babies need care, attention and love, and we’ll educate the children about care routines with the tortoise.”
Ofsted rated the nursery as “outstanding” after an inspection last year.
It has had an outstanding report before, but this is its first since moving into the Seascape Sure Start Centre six years ago.
The report praised numerous aspects of the nursery such as the “excellent” teaching.
The nursery has a range of resources and equipment, which were also described as “excellent”.
There was praise for Kelly too as the nursery’s leadership was hailed as “inspirational with a strong drive to continuously improve”.
Ofsted also commended the nursery’s partnership with parents and other professionals.
