STUDENTS have been given a new 51-inch television.

Durham County councillors Audrey Laing and Gordon Tennant donated £500 to buy the TV for East Durham College’s construction training centre.

Coun Laing said: “We are delighted to donate the money to the Technical Academy to help enhance the students’ social space.

“The academy is equipping our young people with the skills needed to keep our local economy vibrant and I feel it is important to send a message to young people that they are important and valued.”

Education manager Rob Hutchinson said: “We are extremely grateful for the help and support we have received from Durham County Council.

“The students will benefit greatly from this donation as it will considerably enhance their recreational time whilst attending the Technical Academy and it’s things like this that can help with student retention and success.”

The centre offers training in a range of construction trades, including plastering, tiling and fitted interiors.

Student James Verrill, 24, from Seaham, added: “The new TV has made a really different to the atmosphere in our social area. It’s great.”
