A childcare group is planning a jobs-boosting £1.5million nursery for Sunderland.

Award-winning Kids 1st Nurseries has been granted planning permission to build its latest nursery in Ashbrooke, employing 25 full-time staff.

This will be the company’s 12th nursery and is expected to open in January next year.

The new purpose-built nursery in Gorse Road will have 108 places to provide childcare for children aged three months to five years. There will be a large enclosed garden and a separate dining room.

Allison Winship, head of childcare, at Kids 1st, said: “We are delighted to be opening our twelfth nursery in Sunderland in what will be our twelfth year in business.

“This is a really exciting time for Kids 1st. We are opening three new nurseries in the North East over the next 18 months, but Sunderland is particularly special to us as we have been looking for a location to build here for a while. We believe we have found the perfect site, the nursery is surrounded by lots of mature trees, perfect for exploring and outdoor play.

“We have already started to make links with local organisations, including the Foundation of Light, and we can’t wait to become part of the city of Sunderland.”

Kids 1st Nurseries, which has won Highest Quality Childcare Provider in the UK by Nursery World for four consecutive years, prides itself on outstanding features, such as bright spacious rooms, home-cooked food, fingerprint entry systems, a dedicated pre-school, electronic whiteboards and a coffee-to-go service for parents.
