A DURHAM MP has welcomed proposals to lower tuition fees for students.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said his party would restore teaching funding for universities and cap tuition fees at £6,000, a third less than the Coalition Governments plans.

Durham City MP Roberta Blackman-Woods, Labour chairwoman of the Parliamentary Universities Group, said: “These announcements are a first step in recognising that it is not only students that need to play a role in funding universities, and mark the beginnings of a plan to repair the damage being done by current Coalition higher education policy.”

She said she hopes the shadow team will continue to work on an alternative to fees, along the lines of a graduate tax.
