YOUNGSTERS at a city school wanted to give elderly war veterans a special treat for Remembrance Day.

As well as organising their own Service of Remembrance for fellow students to honour the sacrifices those in the armed forces have made and are continuing to make in today’s conflicts, pupils at the Broadway Junior School Breakfast Club and volunteers also organised the making of 10 luxury hampers which they called “The Best For The Best” to give to elderly members of the Royal British Legion on Wearside.

Audrey Ferry, breakfast club co-ordinator at the Springwell Road school, said: “In our world today, we feel it is important that the younger generation are made aware of the sacrifices made by ordinary people in the two world wars and also today in present conflicts. We are really proud of what our children have learned.”
