HUNDREDS of Wearside schoolchildren got out of the classroom as they competed in a city-wide sports day.

More than 340 five and six-year-olds from Sunderland took part in the first ever Infant Agility Sportshall Challenge, organised by the Foundation of Light, Sunderland University and Tyne & Wear Sport.

The event, held at Sunderland University’s City Space facility, saw the youngsters take part in a series of different challenges which tested their running, jumping and throwing skills.

Young leaders from Biddick Academy, in Washington, and Hetton School lead the events while popular Sunderland AFC mascots Samson and Delilah also made an appearance.

Staff from the Foundation then handed out prizes to winners.
