Former hostage John McCarthy to give talk at New College Durham

NEW College Durham welcomed journalist and broadcaster John McCarthy as a keynote speaker at its 15th annual staff conference.

The 56-year-old spoke about his experience of being kidnapped at gunpoint and held hostage for five years by Jihadist terrorists in Lebanon.

He said humour was important in his survival, and the support of the other hostages.

John Widdowson, principal and chief executive of New College Durham, said: “We were honoured to have such a high-profile guest speaker at our conference this year.

“Our theme is ‘working better together,’ and John McCarthy inspired us to continue to maintain our high standards and to provide our students with the best possible experience.”

Four hundred and fifty academic and support staff attended the conference, which took place at New College Durham ’s campus at Framwellgate Moor.
