Debating pupils

YOUNG politicians are being urged to prepare for parliament.

Sharon Hodgson, MP for Washington and Sunderland West, is encouraging schools across the city to take part in Parliament Week.

The national initiative, run by Parliament’s Education Service and now in its second year, aims to encourage pupils to take an active interest in how decisions which affect their everyday lives are made in Westminster, through a week of activities from November 19 to 25.

Mrs Hodgson has written to all the schools in her constituency to urge them to get involved in the many activities aimed to inspire students to take part in the democratic process.

She said: “Parliament Week is an important initiative to encourage young people to explore how the law-making process works, and how that relates to the issues that are important to them.”
