HAIR and beauty students at New College Durham are celebrating success at a regional competition.

The North East heat of the AHT, Association of Hairdressers and Therapists, took place this week at Gateshead.

Students from schools and colleges across the region competed against each other in 15 different categories, including cut and blow dry, ladies avant garde, team bridal and face painting.

New College Durham was placed within the top three in five of the categories and will represent the North East at the AHT final, held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool next month.

Prize winners from New College Durham were, Rachel Adams who won the commercial nail art category; Beth Todd, Georgia Daws and Shannon Walters came second in the total team look.

Imogen Hearne was second in the 14 plus face painting category, Lilli Hunter was placed third in the 14 plus evening style with ornamentation and Sarah Liddle took third place in the classical 1950s make-up.

Rachel, 16, from Chester-le-Street, a Level 2 Beauty Therapy student at New College Durham, said: “I did some research and decided to do a tribal nail design using pastel colours and rhinestones.

“I was really surprised when I won, I’ve never won anything in my life.

“It was a great atmosphere at the competition and it has definitely boosted my confidence.”

Among the other competitors in the regional heat were Boldon School, East Durham College and Sunderland College.
