YOUNGSTERS at a Wearside primary school were delighted when the Archbishop of York paid them a visit.
As part of a trip to the Diocese of Durham area, The Most Reverend Dr John Sentamu went along to meet the staff and students at Hylton Red House Primary School.
While at the Rotherham Road building, Dr Sentamu gave a short talk to the children, before saying prayers for the new school, which is due to open in September.
The aim of the two-day visit to the region was so the Archbishop could see the work of the Diocese in community engagement.
He visited Sunderland College’s Hylton Campus, Sunderland Minster and Durham Prison.
Dr Sentamu also gave a speech about local democracy at a dinner held in Washington Old Hall. The Archbishop was accompanied throughout his visit by the Bishop of Jarrow, The Right Reverend Mark Bryant.
