LABOUR’S Ed Miliband will become the first leader of his party to speak at the Durham Miners’ Gala in almost 25 years.

Mr Miliband has confirmed he will speak at this year’s event in Durham City on Saturday, July 14.

The Doncaster MP, brother of South Shields politician and SAFC director David Miliband, last year declined the traditional invitation to the celebration because RMT workers’ leader Bob Crow was present.

The last Labour leader to visit the Gala was Neil Kinnock in 1989.

A Labour North spokesman said: “The Big Meeting is one of the highlights of the Labour movement’s calendar and we look forward to welcoming Ed to Durham in the summer for what I’m sure will be an enjoyable day.”
