Durham Constabulary received a number of calls from members of the public on Saturday, concerned about a loose horse running on or near the road at Thorpe roundabout in Easington.

When officers arrived, they found the animal running wild and struggled to catch it until PC Kevin Robson had a moment of inspiration and decided to use the rope kept as standard kit in police vehicles for possible river rescues.

"I made an impromptu lasso and managed to catch the horse with a shot I couldn’t manage again in a million years," he said.

"We left the horse in a field with plenty of grass where hopefully its rightful owner will have found it."
