A CITY centre store was forced into opening late after safety concerns.
Marks & Spencer, in High Street West, Sunderland, remained closed after staff arrived yesterday morning, following fears over dust caused by maintenance work.
Managers made the decision to call in M&S health and safety inspectors after spotting the dust, kicked-up by repairs being carried out to the store’s lift.
The all-clear was given mid-afternoon and the store was opened.
An M&S spokeswoman said: “As a precautionary measure the store remained closed this morning as a health and safety inspection was conducted, following a staff alert.
“The all clear was given, and the store was reopened at 2.30pm and is now trading as normal.
“We apologise for any inconvenience to our customers.”
