Durhap bishop backs ‘Robin Hood tax’

THE Bishop of Durham has backed calls for a “Robin Hood tax,” claiming banks must return to serving the common good.

The Right Reverend Justin Wellby, a former financier, spoke after the Archbishop of Canterbury aligned himself with anti-capitalist protesters outside St Paul’s Cathedral, and supported a tax levy on financial transactions.

He said: “There needs to be a significant swing back to the idea of finance as a service industry which is there for the common good.

“It’s obviously allowed to make money in its own right, but it’s also there for the common good and to benefit the rest of society.”
