Emily Roberts put the visitors ahead in the second half, but Rinsola Babajide’s spectacular long-range effort immediately levelled matters to earn Watford their first point of the season.

Durham keeper Rachael Laws made a fine save to deny Charlotte Kerr, who then fired wide, while a miscued clearance by Watford’s Meghan McKeag almost gifted Durham the lead.

The game sparked into life after the break.

Roberts struck a low shot from the edge of the box after 54 minutes to beat Gillett down to her right, before Babajide produced her moment of quality to equalise.

The winger picked up the ball from 30 yards and left Laws rooted to the spot with a delightful chip into the top corner.

Durham coach Lee Sanders said: “We can never be unhappy with a point, especially away from home, but I do think it is two points lost.

“We had lots of opportunities in the game and we put Watford under a tremendous amount of pressure in the last 15 minutes.

“We’ve had one cleared off the line and one possibly and inch from going in and a few good clear penalty probes but it didn’t go our way.

“Credit to Watford, we played them a couple of times last season and they really worked hard for it today and they battled so fair play to them.”
