Durham rocked by Lancashire revival in Northern Counties League opener

Durham's Northern Counties League campaign began with a heartbreaking 10-8 defeat to Lancashire at Heysham.

The visitors led 4-2 after the foursomes but endured agony in the singles.

Boldon’s Gavin Nesbit and Andrew McCarrick scored a 3&2 foursomes win, backed by Sam Robinson and James Wilson’s 7&6 rout, a one-hole victory for Richard Aisbitt and James Glenn and two halved matches.

Lancashire won the first four singles games to take control, with South Shields’ Martin McCririck (3&2), Jamie Birbeck and John Kennedy the only Durham victors, though Stuart Brown and Robinson forced halves.

Durham host Cumbria at Barnard Castle on June 4.

In the other opening matches, Cheshire won 10-8 at Northumberland and Yorkshire triumphed by the same score away to Cumbria.
